Steps to Become a Foster or Adoptive Parent
Steps to Become a Foster or Adoptive Parent
  • Call the recruitment line at 1-866-661-5656. Your call will be returned within one business day and you will be provided information to include dates and times of the next Orientation.

  • Attend Orientation. This is your opportunity to learn more about fostering or adopting and decide if this may be right for you and your family. Orientations are held monthly.

  • Schedule a MAPP class and complete 30-hours of MAPP training. MAPP classes are provided free of charge and are currently being held at multiple sites on various days and times. Generally, you will attend MAPP classes one night a week for three hours per session for a total of ten weeks. You will learn more during Orientation.

  • Satisfy background screening requirements. The Safe Children Coalition will assist you with this process. Generally you and all your household members must undergo local law, FBI/FDLE and abuse registry clearances to determine eligibility.

  • Complete your foster or adoptive paperwork and home study. This includes a health screening and health certificate from your physician. Again, you will learn more about these requirements and the process during Orientation.

  • Foster Care Licensing & Placement OR Adoptive Match & Finalization. Once all requirements are met, your home will be licensed for foster care or you will be ready to be matched for adoption. Placements or matches will be made based on your profile and on the profile of the child to be placed or matched. For adoption, finalization is the last step in this process.
