Monday, April 24, 2006 SASSY Synchronized Swimming Qualifies For Southern Zone Regional Meet

SASSY, the Sarasota Family YMCA Synchronized Swimming Team, will compete at the Southern Zone Regional Competition to be held in Coral Springs on May 6 and 7.

The team qualified by swimming against 200 synchronized swimmers from seven other Florida teams at the Florida Synchronized Swimming Association Southern Zone Qualification Meet held at the Gandy Aquatic Complex at the City of Lakeland Kelley Recreation Center April 22 and 23.

The other teams vying for qualification were the Gainesville Gaviatas, the Flagler County (Daytona Beach) Synchro Belles, Orlando Loreleis, Suncoast (Largo) Waterworks, Tallahassee Serinas, and the Tampa Bay Synch Rays.

In the Team Routine competition, SASSY took the first place Blue Ribbon with an outstanding team performance by Alice Clearie, Corinna Cocchi, Sophia Desenberg, Suzette Hood, Jillian Mayer and Fritzi Wittmann.

A superlative individual effort was turned in by Lisa Colin who grabbed first place in 14-15 year old Compulsory Figures and then outclassed the rest of the field in capturing the Blue Ribbon in 14-15 year old Solo Routine competition. Corinna placed third in 12-13 year old Solo Routine competition. In Duet competition, Jillian and Suzette nabbed first place with Fritzi and Alice taking second.

In Compulsory Figures for 14-15 year olds, Jillian placed second, Suzette fifth and Sophia sixth. In Compulsory Figures for 12-13 year olds, Corinna placed sixth and Alice seventh.

SASSY, now in its fifth year, welcomes all middle and high school girls who like to swim and who like music. Tryouts can be arranged by contacting the YMCA at 922-9622 or by emailing Coach Robin Ahearn at sassysarasota@hotmail.com.
