YMCA Achiever named National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar

Andres’ Curiel is proof the focusing on academics does pay off. Recently, Andres’ was inducted into the National Honor Society and the Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematics Honor Society. His academic success was also recognized by the College Board as a 2008-09 National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) Scholar.

The Pine View High School senior is one of less than 5,000 students nationwide chosen for the honor. To obtain recognition as a Scholar, the student must be of Hispanic/Latino descent, have scored a minimum PSAT score for their region and achieve a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

The NHRP was developed in 1983 with the purpose of identifying outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students. In addition to similar academic standards, the National Honor Society selects members based on outstanding performance in the areas of leadership, character, citizenship and service.

Andres’ is involved in the YMCA Achiever’s Program and works the Membership desk at the Frank G. Berlin Branch of the Sarasota Family YMCA.

The YMCA Achievers Program is for middle and high school students. Participants must sign a contract to participate in program events and educational forums that focus on personal development, college preparation and cultural enrichment. A minimum 2.5 grade point average must be maintained throughout the school year. Those who would like to take part should call 955-8194 ext. 140 or 139.
